GGD (Public health service)

Happy healthy children

Growing up healthy and safe comes naturally to most young people. As a parent or caregiver, you aim for the best for your child, so they can grow up in a safe and stimulating environment. But young people of secondary school age develop at lightning speed. This sometimes raises doubts, questions or concerns. This is when Youth Health Care can help.

Youth health care

Schools work together with the Youth Health Care team of GGD Brabant-Zuidoost. This team consists of a youth physician, youth nurse, nursing specialist, assistant, behavioural scientist and a healthy school advisor. Youth health care is for all children and their parents: from pregnancy and birth to the age of 18.

Health survey
In the first and fourth grades, all pupils complete a digital questionnaire (the Check). You will receive information about this in advance. Questions are asked about health, lifestyle and social contacts, among other things. Class 1 pupils are also weighed and measured. The aim of this health examination is to identify possible (health) problems in young people in time and, if necessary, to offer help. If the questionnaire reveals concerns or questions, or if the height and weight screening gives cause to do so, the youth nurse will take your son or daughter out of class for a meeting. Your child can also request a meeting on his or her own. If the youth health care team recommends help or counselling, you will be informed.
The health screening is not compulsory. Youth health care has a statutory duty to monitor the health and development of children and young people. This is to identify and prevent problems in time.

Care team
JGZ also participates in the school’s care structure, joining the school’s care meetings.

Vaccinations
All children in the Netherlands are entitled to vaccinations against 13 serious infectious diseases. This is regulated in the national National Vaccination Programme (RVP). From the age of 10, all children are offered group vaccinations for HPV (10 years) and Meningococcal ACWY (14 years). The GGD carries out these group vaccinations. They do so annually in spring and autumn and at different locations in the region. Is it your child’s turn? Then you will automatically receive an invitation from RIVM. More information at www.ggdbzo.nl/groepsvaccinaties-rvp or www.rijksvaccinatieprogramma.nl.

Sick leave guidance
The school keeps a close eye on pupils’ absenteeism. If we are concerned, we inform the parent. We can also report the pupil to the youth health care team. They then invite you and your son or daughter for an interview. The JGZ professional then discusses what is causing the absenteeism and how further absenteeism can be limited. The health of the young person is always central to this.

The GGD does more

  • Besides the individual health examination in class 1 and 4, the GGD also does anonymous questionnaire research into young people’s health. For example, to gain insight into their alcohol consumption, exercise behaviour and social contacts. The information from this Youth Health Monitor helps schools and municipalities in their policy and approach to help young people grow up as healthy as possible. Whenever a survey takes place, you are always informed about it in advance.
  • GGD can help schools create a healthy learning and living environment. Through the Healthy School approach, we offer advice and support on various health topics such as wellbeing, exercise and sports or relationships and sexuality. Want to know if your child attends a Healthy School? Check out: Overview of Healthy Schools | My Healthy School
  • GGD staff provide information meetings and courses for parents, schools and children. View the range of courses and webinars on parenting and growing up here.
  • Every four years, the GGD conducts a survey on the health of all children aged 0 to 11 and 12 to 17. With the results from these surveys, municipalities and schools, among others, can develop their policies and activities.
  • The GGD participates in the Storm approach in most municipalities. More info can be found at: Healthy living? Check it out! – GGD Brabant-Zuidoost or Home – STORM approach
  • The GGD has a sexual health centre. Young people up to 24 can get an STD test anonymously and free of charge. The website www.sense.info provides information about sexuality and STIs and the possibility to chat anonymously about it or take a training course.
  • The GGD deals with the prevention, control and detection of infectious diseases.
